Cost-effective test rigs for metal-free batteries to boost equity raising and industrialization

Rivus Batteries is developing a metal-free battery chemistry for flow batteries, based on organic molecules, water and salt, which can be manufactured in a safe and local value chain within Europe. The technology enables sustainable energy storage and is particularly suited for large-scale balancing of solar and wind power and grid support. Following a successful prototype, Rivus has confirmed customer pilots for 2025-2026. The goal is a stationary energy storage solution that, over its lifetime, is both more cost-effective and more environmentally friendly than today’s lithium-ion batteries. Industrial scale-up and market launch is planned from 2026.

Dialogues with customers and investors have underscored the need for more robust data and evidence beyond the current lab test results and initial prototype. To strengthen interest and convert it into paid pilots and investments, this project is focused on the development of cost-effective prototype batteries (stack test rigs) that are hundreds of times larger than the current lab-scale versions. The project’s goal is to enable systematic testing, data collection, and demonstration of long-term stability and performance at a larger scale. This is essential for validating the technology, reducing technical risk, and creating the conditions to secure additional investments and customer contracts needed for market launch and industrial scale-up.
